Our History

Reverend Edward Ferguson shares with New Life a dream, insight and purpose.  He has a good reputation in the community, and is a powerful speaker, teacher and leader.  Pastor Ferguson encourages reading and instruction to further provide and enlighten Christians through various ministries.  He has been a man of God for many areas.  New Life through Pastor Ferguson’s direction, continues to develop as faith-based worshippers.

After years of serving our Lord and Savior in various ministry institutions, Pastor Edward Ferguson and his wife, Helen Ferguson, prayed and were guided by the Holy Spirit to take their ministry into the prison system.  They believed that this particular congregation should not be judged for whatever wrongdoings they had committed, but instead be taught the Word of God to encourage their hearts.  For many years, they were committed to the prison ministry in teaching and preaching God’s Word.  Then one day, God gave this anointed couple the vision to start their own branch of Zion.

On Sunday, July 28, 1996, a group of 14 people gathered at 4000 W. Franklin Street to discuss the creation of a church.  Within that group were Edward and Helen Ferguson, Doris Alston, Charlene Washington, Jenna Martinez, Hattie Hill, Dale Ferguson, Demetria Monroe, Verdessa McDougald, Douglas Tilley, Robin Kane, Gloria Vincent, Edquardo (last name unavailable), and Cassie Hutton.  During this gathering, 5 of the 14 committed to membership of this new house of Zion.  Led by the Holy Vision placed upon Pastor and Lady Ferguson, they both agreed that a mighty work had been
delegated to them through the union of the Holy Spirit.

Our “first” church service consisted of prayer, a hymn of praise, a work from the Lord and encouragement from Pastor and First Lady Ferguson.  Bible Study was held the following Wednesday, where more members joined this small church.  This small, but mighty congregation decided it was time to choose a name for their church home.  After much discussion, many suggestions had been bought forth.  However, we all knew only one could be selected.  It was then that the Lord laid on their hearts…

NEW LIFE FELLOWSHIP WORSHIP CENTER

Members were added to the church weekly.  Because of the growing congregation, in August, services began to take place in a temporary church home, the Days Inn West on Route 40.  While worshiping at the Days Inn, our membership grew to approximately 60-75 members.

As a church family, we experienced, the gaiety of a wedding, the sadness of a lost one’s going home service, the joy of baptizing seven of our own and the fellowship of taking a “Journey’s for Jesus” over the highways and byways of the East Coast.

Prior to moving to the Days Inn West on Route 40, we fellowshipped on Yale Avenue, in the Holiday Inn on Security Blvd., and on Easter Sunday prior to moving into our miracle building, we had our worship service on one of the luxurious Ferguson Charter Buses.  Finally, in June of 2000, we were blessed with our own church home.

We are currently worshipping and serving the Lord at 4725 Old Court Road.  The Lord blessed us abundantly with 2 acres of land, a church, and a Fellowship Hall.  We continue daily to stand on our motto:

“Upon this rock I will build my Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Matthew 16:18

To God be the glory for all He has done.  Amen.
